INSTALLATION ON INDOOR WALLS

In partnership with MAPEI (adhesives and sealing agents), TUSCAN Levelling System (installation systems) and Profilitec (profiles).Atlas Concorde LINEA slim thickness slabs can be used to clad pre-existing or new walls. LINEA slabs are very light therefore they can be installed in contexts where a reduced weight is a determining aspect.

CHECK OF CONDITIONS AND TYPE OF SUPPORT
There are different types of supports and substrates on which LINEA slim thickness slabs can be applied, therefore Atlas Concorde recommends carrying out a preliminary check on the support materials.

Concrete walls
That is to say walls with concrete casting directly on site and/or prefabricated concrete, usually with a flat surface able to be directly covered by ceramic materials. Before proceeding with the installation, Atlas Concorde recommends checking:

  • seasoning (at least of three months under standard conditions);
  • verticality of the wall;
  • that the wall is clean and undamaged in order not to compromise the adhesion of LINEA slabs.

Cement-based plaster
Cement-based plaster is the mural covering that is mostly used for internal walls. Prior to proceeding with the installation of ceramic tiles, Atlas Concorde recommends checking cement-based plaster on the basis of the following parameters:

  • seasoning (a week per cm of thickness);
  • verticality of the wall;
  • the wall is clean and undamaged in order not to compromise the adhesion of LINEA slabs.

If the plasterwork has been carried out using pre-mixed products, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Plaster or plaster panels
Prior to proceeding with the installation of LINEA ceramic tiles, Atlas Concorde recommends checking plaster or plaster panels on the basis of the following parameters:

  • the support must be dry (dampness level lower than 0.5%)
  • the support must be solid
  • the wall must be clean from residue and undamaged in order not to compromise the adhesion of LINEA slabs.

Due to the fact that plaster supports are incompatible with the cement adhesives that are commonly used for the installation of ceramic materials, it is necessary to apply a layer of primer. As this type of walls are characterised by a high sensibility to water, for the building of bathrooms, changing rooms and showers in residential and public areas, they will require the maximum attention to the water-proofing conditions of the surface (see Chart) as water penetration could cause the damaging of plaster and the consequent detachment of the ceramic cladding.

Plasterboard walls
Plasterboard walls are prefabricated panels made of plaster covered with paperboard, therefore before proceeding with the installation of LINEA slim thickness slabs, it is necessary to check that these panels are:

  • Rigid;
  • Vertical;
  • Clean and undamaged so as not to compromise the adhesion of LINEA slim thickness slabs.

As with plaster walls and cement-based plaster, the use of plasterboard walls in areas subject to the presence of moisture must be carefully thought through and the surface must be adequately treated to make it completely waterproof. (see Chart).

Marble or ceramic coverings
LINEA slim thickness slabs are perfect for renovation projects. It is possible to renovate walls without demolishing the pre-existing covering applying the ceramic slabs directly onto it. In the case of marble or ceramic substrates (as well as natural stones), Atlas Concorde recommends checking that the substrate is:

  • Undamaged and clean, free from residue that can compromise the adhesion of LINEA slim thickness slabs.
  • Vertical
  • Perfectly anchored to the pre-existing wall.

Regardless of the type of substrate and before proceeding with the installation of LINEA slim thickness slabs, it is of primary importance to check the planarity of the surface in order to avoid the formation of gaps under the slabs that could cause the weakness of the ceramic cladding. It is necessary to correct any imperfections of the substrate using specialised levelling products.

TILE INSTALLATION
Prior to proceeding with the installation of LINEA slim thickness slabs, it is necessary to choose the suitable adhesives depending on the destination of use, the features of the substrate, the size of the ceramic slabs and the time elapsing from tile installation to the use of the surface. Once these parameters have been considered, it will be possible to start installation.

Double spreading

  • Clean LINEA tiles with water only if necessary (presence of dust).
  • Apply the adhesive using a round-teeth trowel (teeth 5x7mm at 60°). In order to obtain perfect adhesion, spread a thin layer of adhesive on the wall using the smooth side of the trowel first, and then apply the other layer of adhesive using the toothed part of the trowel.
  • Apply the adhesive onto the back of LINEA slabs thus avoiding the formation of gaps between the wall and the ceramic covering that can then cause cracking or detachment of tiles.

Installation
Apply the slim thickness slab to the wall in order to have a perfect adhesion and levelling. Atlas Concorde recommends to use a rubber trowel (or two suction cups for large size tiles) and then proceed with an homogeneous tapping of the surface avoiding the use of rubber hammering tools.

Grout lines
In the case of traditional substrates for walls, a minimum grout line of 1mm can be possible, while in the case of deformable substrates such as water-proofing walls, wood supports and the like, a grout line of at least 3mm is recommended.
In the case of straightforward installation patterns, the slabs must be staggered of maximum 1/3 of the length of the long side. (20 cm for 30×60 cm; 40 cm for 60×120 and 30×120 cm).
For the installation of LINEA slabs on indoor walls, Atlas Concorde recommends to use TUSCAN LEVELLING SYSTEM which:

  • Allows easy elimination of uneven levels between adjacent slabs;
  • Keeps the slab in the desired position;
  • Reduces installation times.

GROUTING
Provided that the choice for the adequate grouting agent depends on the destination of use of the environment to be tiled, Atlas Concorde recommends carrying out grouting of joints using specific fine-granulometry coloured products. In fact, compared to sand and cement grouts, these products offer many advantages such as:

  • Possibility to have the same colour of the ceramic covering;
  • The grout line is less porous therefore it does not retain dirt;
  • Perfect grouting with no uneven levels.

Regardless of the grouting agent used, Atlas Concorde recommends carrying out grouting after 2-3 hours of installation when using quick-setting adhesives, if using standard setting adhesives, grouting must be carried out 4-8 hours after installation.

JOINTS AND SEALING
During tile installation and when the total cladding area is larger than 60 square meters, expansion joints must be carried out, while perimeter joints must be carried out in correspondence of the floor-wall joints, floor-sanitary-ware joints, floor-shower joints and of the internal and external angles of the cladding with a width of at least than 5mm.
For the sealing of joints of LINEA slim thickness slabs, we recommend using a specialised silicone sealing agent, either transparent or coloured. In alternative, it is possible to place profiles in correspondence of angles thus protecting, in an effective way, the most stressed area of the ceramic cladding.
Of the products available on the market, Atlas Concorde recommends using the Profiltec solutions that allow for a minimum aluminium profile placed at the junction between the wall and the floor. The special section of these profiles allows for the joint of the slim-thickness wall covering and the floor keeping an adequate expansion joint. The protruding winglet of the profile permits the total covering of perimeter joints and allows for an adequate expansion space of the floor.
